2 Timothy 3:16 states: “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness” (NIV). Written by the Apostle Paul, this foundational verse emphasizes that the words of the Bible originate from God and serve as a practical guide for spiritual growth and moral direction.

While phrased slightly differently, key versions like the NIV, ESV, and KJV all emphasize that all Scripture is divinely inspired and beneficial for spiritual growth.

Purpose of Scripture

This verse highlights four key functions of Scripture:

  • Teaching: Instructing in truth and God’s character.
  • Rebuking: Identifying errors in belief or behaviour.
  • Correcting: Restoring individuals to the right path.
  • Training in righteousness: Guiding ongoing spiritual development

Learn to engage

To engage the Bible’s beauty and complexity, start small by picking a single short book like Mark or Ephesians. Read a few verses each day. Ask what the text says, what it meant long ago, and how it fits into your life today.

  • Pick a quiet time and a comfortable place every day.
  • Read slowly and read the same short part two times.
  • Write down words or ideas that stand out to you.
  • Keep track of questions you have as you read.
  • Compare a few different word translations to see different views.
  • Look at the history of who wrote the book and why.
